The Given Name Manhattan

Prior to the European discovery and colonization of the island, the Lenape Indians lived on the island known today as Manhattan.
As written in the 1609 logbook of Robert Juet, an officer on Henry Hudson's yacht Halve Maen (Half Moon), the area was known as Manna-hata.
A map of the area from 1610 (see above), contains the name Manahata twice, on both the east and west sides of the Mauritius River (later to be named the Hudson River).
The name Manhattan is thereby generally accepted (as also mentioned in a May 2004 NY Times article) to be of Lenape origin from the word Manahata, meaning "island of many hills".
