The 88th Academy Awards

The 88th annual Academy Awards will take place on February 28, 2016, honoring the best films of 2015.

Presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the award ceremony will take place at the Dolby Theatre in L.A. and televised live to millions worldwide.

The nominees will compete officially for an - "Academy Award of Merit" more fondly known as an Oscar.

Let's take a look at some of the nominees, a list of names of some very creative and artistically talented people.

This year's Best Actor nominees include Eddie Redmayne - "The Danish Girl", Michael Fassbender - "Steve Jobs", Matt Damon - "The Martian", Leonardo DiCaprio - "The Revenant", and Bryan Cranston - "Trumbo".

The Best Actress nominees include Jennifer Lawrence - "Joy", Brie Larson - "Room", Saoirse Ronan - "Brooklyn", Cate Blanchett - "Carol", and Charlotte Rampling - "45 Years".

Vying for Best Supporting Actor are Christian Bale - "The Big Short", Sylvester Stallone - "Creed", Mark Rylance - "Bridge of Spies", Mark Ruffalo - "Spotlight", and Tom Hardy - "The Revenant".

Looking to win Best Supporting Actress are Rachel McAdams - "Spotlight", Jennifer Jason Leigh - "The Hateful Eight", Alicia Vikander - "The Danish Girl", Rooney Mara - "Carol", and Kate Winslet - "Steve Jobs".

The Best Director contenders include George Miller - "Mad Max: Fury Road", Lenny Abrahamson - "Room", Tom McCarthy - "Spotlight", Adam McKay - "The Big Short", and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu - "The Revenant".

More internationally, the Best Foreign Film nominees include "Youth" - Paolo Sorrentino, "The Brand New Testament" - Jaco Van Dormael, "I'm Dead But I Have Friends" - Guillaume Malandrin and Stephane Malandrin, "Son of Saul" - Laszlo Nemes, "Taxi" - Jafar Panahi, "Birdman" - Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, and "Mia Madre" - Nanni Moretti.
